UDUPI: A team of researchers has found a 14th-century Kannada inscription at Ganadabettu in Ajekar under Karkal taluk of Udupi district in Karnataka.
The team includes professor SA Krishnaiah, director of Oriental Archives Research Centre, Udupi, K Shridhar Bhat, retired teacher of U Kamalabai High School, and Shruthesh Acharya Moodubelle from Pleach India Foundation in Telangana capital Hyderabad.
Shruthesh Acharya said that the inscription was found at the property belonging to Ammu Shetty.
It consists of 10 lines in Kannada script and language and is three feet high and two feet wide and is engraved on granite.
At the top of the inscription there is a sun-moon and conch-chakra engraving, belonging to Shaka year 1331, Margashira Suddha1 Thursday, corresponding to 1409 (Virodhi Samvatsara) November 7 Thursday.
The inscription mentions a donation of oil and 11 coconuts (or coconut oil from 11 coconuts) from the area of Bettim (present Ganadabettu) to Vishnu God at Ajekar by Kathu Moolige of Manne (known as Marne at present).
The research team was supported by Prakash Shetty Marne, Suresh Shetty Ganadabettu, Ravi Santhosh Alva and Sushanth Shetty.
