KARNAL: The mandi workers here declared that they will go on strike from October 1 against the alleged reduction in their labour charges.
Thousands of labourers from various grain markets of the district on Thursday gathered for a panchayat in Karnal’s Sector 12, where they took this decision.
They also gave a memorandum for the chief minister to the district administration, claiming that the state government had reduced their labour charges for unloading, cleaning, dressing and other related works in the grain markets to Rs 8.52 from Rs 12.72 for each bag in the times of price rise.
They said the labour class couldn’t survive the rising cost if the government fixed their wages so low.
Mandi Mazdoor Sangh district president Jang Bahadur Yadav said: “Looking at the price index, the government should pay us labour charge of Rs 15 at least. We will remain on strike until the government accepts our demand.” Karnal mandi secretary Chander Parkash said: “Higher authorities are sorting out the matter.”
