Karl Marx memorial site vandalised in suspected hammer attack

Damaged: scratches were found on Karl Marx's plaque (Picture: PA)

Karl Marx's burial site in Highgate has been vandalised in a suspected hammer attack.

Scratches can be seen on the Grade I listed memorial in a picture tweeted by Highgate Cemetery today.

An attempt has also been made to damage the names of the German socialist and philosopher Marx and his wife Jenny von Westphalen, written on a plaque.

Ian Dungavell, chief executive of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery, said: “Why would someone want to do this? It is a deliberate act, targeting Karl and his wife.

“We have reported it to police and believe it took place over the weekend.”

The cemetery tweeted: “Marx’s memorial has been vandalised. It looks like someone had a go at it with a hammer. This is no way to treat our heritage."
