Karl Lagerfeld: Tributes pour in for Chanel creative director following death aged 85

It's been reported that Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld has passed away at the age of 85.

The initial reports were made by French media, who stated that the German fashion designer had died after being admitted to a hospital in Paris.

Following the news of Lagerfeld's death, numerous people have been paying tribute to the fashion icon on social media.

"'To design is to breathe, so if I can't breathe I'm in trouble'". RIP @KarlLagerfeld", tweeted English fashion designer Henry Holland, quoting words spoken by Lagerfeld himself.

"Oh my goodness. Karl Lagerfeld has died. Huge loss to fashion. Huge," added columnist Sali Hughes.

"RIP Karl Lagerfeld, the creator of ALL my most cherished fashion week memories with those epic Chanel spectacles in the Grand Palais," wrote editor of You magazine Jo Elvin.

"A genuine fashion titan. A great loss but amazing, indelible legacy."

Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace shared a tribute to Lagerfeld on Instagram, including a photo of the pair.

Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I," Versace wrote.

"We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you."

Alexa Chung shared a message of condolence on Instagram, revealing that she had been afraid to speak to Lagerfeld when they first met.

"Rest in peace, Karl. I remember being so scared to interview you and yet you were in fact incredibly witty and generous," she wrote.

"Thank you for inviting me to some of the most glamorous experiences of my life, it was an honour to know you."

Diane Kruger revealed on Instagram that she wanted to introduce Lagerfeld to her daughter in Paris this week.

"I cannot tell you how much you meant to me and how much I will miss you," she wrote on Instagram.

Scottish comedian Brian Limond tweeted about an interaction he once had with Lagerfeld at a charity event, describing the Fendi creative director as "surprisingly down to earth, and VERY funny".

American DJ Marea Stamper, known as the Black Madonna, shared a photo of a necklace she was gifted at one of his most recent fashion shows.

"RIP Karl Lagerfeld. I will always treasure this gift from the last show in New York," she tweeted.

"Thanks for letting me be a guest in your world."

Model Diego Barrueco paid homage to Lagerfeld by describing him as "one of the biggest legends ever in the industry".

The fashion designer was named creative director of Chanel in 1983. He later also became creative director for Fendi, in addition his own eponymous fashion label.

While he was revered in the fashion industry, he was also known for courting controversy on occasion.

In 2012, Lagerfeld was criticised for describing singer Adele as "a little too fat".

In January, Lagerfeld missed Chanel's haute couture show in Paris, spurring some to speculate over the state of his health.
