Karl Joseph signing with the Browns still pending a physical

Karl Joseph is one of the Cleveland Browns’ bigger free agent signings this offseason. Yet the former Raiders safety has yet to officially sign with the Browns despite agreeing to terms weeks ago.

Browns GM Andrew Berry was asked about Joseph’s status in limbo during his press conference on Friday. Berry blamed the inability of the Browns medical staff to personally give Joseph a physical.

“The big thing there is just the physical,” Berry said of the holdup. “It’s a little bit challenging from state-to-state. That’s really the only reason he hasn’t been announced.”

Passing his physical is no small formality for Joseph. He tore up a knee in college at West Virginia and has missed several NFL games over the last few seasons with toe, hip and groin issues. He played in just nine games in 2019 thanks to a foot injury.

With travel and in-person meetings effectively eliminated with the coronavirus pandemic, the Browns don’t have the ability to make it happen with Joseph just yet.
