Karl Darlow gets 48 hours to prove fitness with Mark Gillespie on standby for debut

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has placed Mark Gillespie on standby for the crunch clash at Wolves on Sunday.

The United chief wants to give Karl Darlow another 48 hours to convince the medical team that he will be fine to play after a collision with Marcus Rashford in the 4-1 defeat against Man United.

Darlow is keen to play against Wolves, and Bruce said: "He's still sore.

"As you can imagine but he has made a huge improvement. We will go down to the wire and see how he is.

"Thankfully it is impact and there is no tear. He has taken an awful knock.

"He is better than he was. Whether he will be fit we will see over the next 48 hours."

Bruce is delighted with the attitude of both of his goalkeepers since Martin Dubravka was ruled out with a heel injury.

Bruce added: "Karl waited for his chance and then he was thrown in.

"Mark Gillespie has played in the cup competitions and do very well."

Gillespie has played in the League Cup three times this term and when asked if the ex-Motherwell man is ready for the Premier League, Bruce replied: "Yes, that's why we brought him here.

"It looks a good shout to play him in the cups as he could make his Premier League debut now."
