Karina Canellakis brings out the passion, jealousy and rage in Tchaikovsky's 'Onegin'

ENCORE! © FRANCE 24

She wields the conductor's baton like a lightning rod for emotion, precision and excellence in classical music: Karina Canellakis is lending her talents to the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées for their rendition of the opera "Eugene Onegin". The award-winning maestra is currently principal guest conductor at the London Philharmonic, as well as chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

She explains to us how Tchaikovsky's instrumentation helps convey the complex feelings at the heart of "Onegin".

We discuss initiatives to open up classical music to wider audiences and she reveals the deceptively simple symphony that prompted her to pursue a career as a conductor.

Finally, we also speak about the "Festival d’Automne à Paris", which is devoting a special Portrait to the British composer Philip Venables. His musical adaptation of 4.48 Psychosis by Sarah Kane will be available at Philharmonie de Paris on the 16th of December.
