Karin Krog & Steve Kuhn: Break of Day review – a near-perfect set of songs

karin krog jazz singer
Karin Krog: nobody does it better.

To improvise on the melody of a song while keeping the words in perfect order is a delicate business. It’s what Billie Holiday did. Karin Krog is one of the few who do it today and no one does it better. She is Norwegian, but sings in English with surpassing ease and subtlety. Steve Kuhn is a superb pianist with a quite remarkable spread of jazz styles under his fingers and together they make an outstanding partnership. In a near-perfect set of classic songs and jazz themes with added lyrics, they succeed in making something memorable every time. They are joined on various tracks by saxophonists Eric Alexander and John Surman and the late trumpeter Lew Soloff.
