Karim Benzema's brutal verdict on Olivier Giroud ahead of Chelsea vs Real Madrid

Eden Hazard and Mateo Kovacic aren't the only reunion stories to look forward to when Chelsea and Real Madrid meet in the Champions League semi-final.

After overcoming Porto and Liverpool respectively in the quarter-final, two powerhouses of European football will do battle over two legs for a right to contest the biggest prize against either Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain next month.

Leading the line for Zinedine Zidane's side is likely to be Karim Benzema.

The Frenchman has been in superb form for Los Blancos this season, netting 25 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions as he aims to fire his side to more glory.

However, he's not France's number one striker.

In fact, this has been the case since 2015 as per his alleged involvement in a plot to blackmail Mathieu Valbuena and therefore missed out on a World Cup winner's medal in 2018.

Benzema's absence has certainly benefitted Olivier Giroud in the past five years with the Chelsea ace a regular under Didier Deschamps and part of the squad that became world champions three summers ago.

Although, Benzema is in no doubt as to who is the better striker.

"You don’t compare Formula 1 with karting, and I am being nice,” Benzema said on Instagram Live. "Next…I know that I am Formula 1.

"It works because he is there, that is the only reason. It won’t be spectacular, he won’t do something amazing, but he has his thing.

"Aside from that, does everyone like the way he plays? I don’t know."

Such comments could spice up the upcoming Champions League tie, but Giroud has insisted there is no rivalry between the pair.

"Clearly, it's a shame, because Karim remains an impressive player for his qualities," Giroud told RMC Sport. "Me, I never had a dispute with him, history wanted us to be opposed. I've always had a good understanding with him, a lot of mutual respect ... at least from me towards him.

"I think it's a shame everything that has happened, it's kind of a mess, but now we have to move on. The English envy us a lot over this young generation which is growing up."
