Kargil Diwas: Martyrs remembered in Karnataka

DHARWAD: It was a solemn and stoic celebration that marked Kargil Vijay Diwas in Dharwad on Tuesday, with political leaders, ex-servicemen and citizens remembering India’s triumph in the 1999 conflict, while paying tribute to those who laid down their lives for the country.

At the Kargil Stoopa on the premises of the Dharwad deputy commissioner’s office, people offered floral tributes to the memorial. Of the 527 soldiers who were slain in the conflict, which ended on July 26, 21 years ago, 13 were from Karnataka.

Deputy commissioner Gurudatt Hegde, Officer Commanding of 5 Girls’ Karnatak NCC Batallion Colonel Jay Mishra, CO of 24 Karnataka NCC Batallion Col Ajay Choudhary, Lt Col (retd) Dr US Dinesh, Lt Col Vijay Patil, Major Umesh Akkihal and others paid floral tributes.

NCC cadets from various schools and colleges, members of various citizens’ organisations and the members of the Uttara Karnataka Sainika Kalyana Samiti, also remembered the martyrs who ‘sacrificed their todays for the nation’s tomorrows’.
