Karen Matthews blames mum for kidnap con and claims she knew where Shannon was

Britain's worst mum Karen Matthews has been blasted by her own mother after accusing her of being in the plot to kidnap her child Shannon.

Shameless Karen told friends that June Matthews, 76, knew where nine-year old Shannon was being held prisoner.

But innocent June said: “This is a load of lies. Like I said at the time I had no idea where that child was when she went missing.

“I didn’t know where Shannon was. I didn’t know she was in that flat. I’m 76 years old. I don’t want all this on my back.

“I haven’t heard anything from Karen and what she is saying is a load of lies.”

Karen, 44, has tried to pass the blame in a string of extraordinary allegations to friends, claiming her dad Gordon implicated her mother in her heinous crime before he died.

But June revealed that her estranged daughter never even saw her dad before he passed away suddenly in 2017.

Karen Matthews staged her daughter's kidnap in 2008 in the deluded belief she could clam the £50k award for information leading to Shannon's discovery (PA)

Karen, of Dewsbury, West Yorks, staged her daughter’s kidnap in 2008 in the deluded belief she could benefit from the £50,000 reward for information leading to Shannon’s discovery.

The mum of seven launched a publicity campaign with boyfriend Craig Meehan, then 22, that left the nation praying for good news.

After a 24-day hunt costing £3million, police found the schoolgirl drugged and trapped under a bed at the nearby home of Craig’s uncle Michael Donovan, then 39.

Karen, who was jailed for eight years along with Donovan, always claimed someone else was responsible.

Now in a string of craven accusations Karen has told friends her father told her of June’s involvement in the plot on his deathbed.

She also lied that her mum knew where Shannon was all along and refused to tell police or her.

Karen told friends in a town in the South East of England – where she has been relocated under a new identity costing the taxpayer tens of thousands of pounds – that: “The truth will come out in the end.

“Before my dad died, something on his death bed... My mum knew all along where my daughter was.

“That was on my dad’s death bed. She was the one who was getting the f***ing pizzas delivered to his f***ing property.”

But Karen’s mum June hit back: “Karen was at her dad’s funeral but she didn’t even see him before he died so he couldn’t have said that to her. She never saw him before he passed away.”

Last month Karen lost a job as a carer for an elderly lady after it was claimed she had become too close to the patient’s husband.

The 72-year old man was dubbed her sugar daddy for funding her lifestyle with his pension.

A source said: “She clearly knows that older people are vulnerable but accusing her own mother in this way is a new low.

“June has lost her husband and been to hell and back with her daughter.

“So to be accused of this when Karen has already been convicted is vile.

Shannon's mother claimed to friends that grandmother June knew of her whereabouts (PA)

“She waited until after her father was dead so he would not be able to defend himself or his wife.”

Sources close to Matthews – who has dramatically changed her appearance since her crime – claim she has repeatedly targeted the elderly since leaving prison in 2012.

Det Supt Andy Brennan of West Yorkshire Police said: “Karen Matthews is pure evil.

“It’s difficult to understand what type of mother would subject her own daughter to such a wicked and evil crime.”
