Karen Carney deletes Twitter account following backlash to Leeds United promotion stance

Amazon Prime pundit and former England international Karen Carney has removed her personal Twitter profile after receiving significant backlash in the wake of her comments about Leeds United.

Carney had stated on Amazon's coverage of the 5-0 win over West Bromwich Albion that Leeds could perhaps have benefitted from the break in the 2019/20 season.

She implied the stoppage in March allowed them to prepare for the home straight in their bid to gain promotion from the Championship, which was poorly received by Leeds United supporters.

The Guardian's Football Weekly podcast and talkSPORT host Max Rushden has tweeted in response to Carney's decision to delete her account in light of the criticism.

Shackleton or Pablo?

Leeds United were also in the firing line for their decision to tweet out a critique of Carney's punditry. The club issued a statement following the negative response to the tweet condemning all abuse directed Carney's way, stating that no harm was intended.

Similarly, Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani had his say on the matter, taking responsibility for the tweet in question.

As Rushden stated, it is unfortunate that a mainstream pundit has removed herself from social media in order to block out a minority of unsavoury and hateful comments, urging people online to take greater care in how they address others.

Much of the criticism to her assessment of Leeds' promotion was fair and called into question whether she had taken into account the club's winning run prior to the season being postponed in March. Although, there were a portion of responses which were considerably less palatable.

This perhaps opens up the wider discussion surrounding online trolls once again.

Other footballing figures have been known to delete their social media accounts following high-profile gaffes, including Arsenal's Runar Alex Runarsson in the wake of the London club's defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup last month.
