Karate kid on top of world after scooping double gold at world championships

Karate kid Kenzie Stewart is on top of the world.

The 13-year-old, a pupil at Irvine Royal Academy, returned home this week after winning double gold at the World Union of Karate Do federations world championships in Slovakia.

The event saw more than 2300 athletes from 42 countries battle it out for prizes.

Kenzie, representing Irvine Takeda and the Scottish Karate Union, won gold in individual fighting (kumite) and individual patterns (kata).

He was also part of a three-man team for fighting in which he won a silver medal.

His proud mum Katrina said: “Kenzie is so dedicated and focused on his karate.

“He’s been doing it since he was five and he trains at home as well as at the club.

“I’m so proud of him.”
