Kanye West proved once again that he is happy to let his wife take the spotlight at the 2019 Met Gala, by choosing an outfit that cost less than $50.
The rapper appeared to forgo the theme Camp: Notes on Fashion altogether, posing on the pink carpet Monday night dressed in black pants, black laced shoes, and a black zip-up Dickies jacket.
According to Vogue, West’s jacket is called “The Eisenhower Jacket” and retails for $42.99 (£33).
While the lightweight water-resistant jacket was an extremely casual choice for the biggest fashion event of the year, it does have an interesting background - as it was inspired by General Dwight D Eisenhower’s favourite WWII jacket.
The affordable look is also easily replicated, as the jacket, which also comes in grey, dark brown, navy, and khaki, is available on both the Dickies website and on Amazon.
On social media, the reaction to West’s jacket was mixed, with some people praising the 41-year-old and others critical of the outfit.
“Dickies jacket to the Met Gala… straight power move,” one person wrote.
Another said: “Kanye West got me wanting to buy the Dickies Eisenhower jacket. Lol, I was looking for a simple black jacket.”
However, someone else tweeted: “His outfit makes him look like her security.”
Comparatively, West’s wife Kim Kardashian wore a custom crystal-covered beige latex dress designed by Thierry Mugler that was created to look as if she had just stepped out of the ocean for the Met Gala.
The outfit, which was “eight months in the making,” was the “first time in 20 years Mr Mugler has designed for the House of Mugler,” according to Kardashian.
