COLUMBIA, S.C. _ Kanye West is running out of chances to compete in South Carolina's general election as a presidential candidate.
West, a popular rapper who broke with his support of President Donald Trump to launch his own presidential campaign, did not meet the deadline to file a petition to appear on the Palmetto State's ballots in November, according to State Election Commission officials.
West needed to submit a petition with 10,000 signatures from eligible South Carolina voters by noon Eastern time Monday.
The former Trump supporter has one last chance to see his name on Palmetto State ballots, State Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire said. West could work to secure the presidential nomination from one of the 10 certified political parties recognized in the state. Most parties have already selected their nominees.
On Friday, West tweeted to South Carolina voters asking them to sign his petition to appear on the ballot as a presidential candidate. He tweeted again Saturday with the locations that volunteers would be collecting signatures around Charleston.
West held his first campaign rally in South Carolina over the weekend in North Charleston. The musical star talked about his stances on marijuana and abortion, and also took shots at Black history icon Harriet Tubman.
West said Tubman, who helped lead enslaved people north through the Underground Railroad, "never actually freed the slaves, she just had them work for other white people." West's comments about Tubman drew "boos" and murmurs from the crowd.
