Kanye West is helping out his home town during the coronavirus pandemic.

The rapper-entrepreneur has, according to a spokesperson, made “a generous donation” to We Women Empowered, a South Side social empowerment initiative owned by Josephine “Mother” Wade.

The organization is delivering three meals daily to elderly residents in Chatham, Woodlawn, Washington Park, South Shore, Grand Crossing, Englewood, Hyde Park, Grand Boulevard, Auburn Gresham and Avalon Park.

Josephine “Mother” Wade, owner of Josephine’s Southern Cooking, is photographed earlier this year at her establishment.

“Today when I got that call, that Kanye West wanted to help the elderly in Chicago and he chose his hometown in the South Side, his old neighborhood, I was beyond words,” said Wade via statement. “And in one phone call, in an instance today, our world was changed. He may not even realize it, but I knew his mother and I used to help them many years ago. All I can say is Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.”

Wade’s food delivery service, Josephine’s Southern Cooking, is hoping to continue food services to seniors for the foreseeable future.

West made a similar donation Los Angeles-based The Dream Center L.A., a drive-thru meal service operating seven days a week, currently serving 7,000 meals per day.

The amount of West’s donation was not disclosed, but according to a spokesperson it is “significant and according to both charities, his donation will provide hundreds of thousands of meals and enable them both to provide food for many weeks or likely months to come.”
