Kante to Bakayoko, Higuain to Pulisic – Rating the 21 Chelsea players signed by Conte and Sarri

Football remains up in the air when it comes to its long-term future due to the coronavirus having spread through the UK.

The Premier League is on a hiatus, with more decisions set to be made tomorrow in another emergency meeting.

The Blues are still in fourth place, while they have the FA Cup quarter-final and Champions League last 16 second leg still to fit in.

But during the gap of action, it’s time to have a little look back at issues with the Blues, and especially around the squad.

Football.london takes a look at the signings made under Conte and Sarri, and the type of squad that Frank Lampard actually inherited.

We rate the players out of 10.

2016/17

N’Golo Kante

From Leicester City, £32m

There’s no doubt that N’Golo Kante was a superb signing to bring from Leicester City to Chelsea and he has been a massive part of their success in the past few years.

A Premier League success, FA Cup crown and Europa League title show just how crucial he has been for the Blues.

The next stage is trying to get over the injuries that he has struggled with this season, and so he can get back to his best form for the Blues.

Rating: 9

Michy Batshuayi

From Marseille, £35m

Michy Batshuayi has really struggled to play a big part for the Blues and has not had much of a chance to start many games.

He has had a couple of moments, including scoring the goal which sealed the Premier League title in Conte’s first campaign.

But with loans at Crystal Palace, Borussia Dortmund and Valencia, it is looking like this could be the Belgian’s final campaign with the Blues.

Rating: 4

David Luiz

From PSG, £32m

The Brazilian returned to the Blues and made an immediate impact in the middle of the three at the back when Conte made his switch.

He lost his place in the following season, with the rise of Andreas Christensen meaning that the more veteran centre-back was replaced.

However, he got it back when Sarri joined the west London club, but was then sold by Lampard in the summer to rivals Arsenal.

Certainly had his moments and was a big part of the Premier League glory, but was inconsistent over his second stint with the club.

Rating: 6

Marcos Alonso

From Fiorentina, £20m

Maybe not a signing that Chelsea fans would have been massively optimistic about after time at Sunderland and Fiorentina.

However, when the three at the back came in his was superb in the left wing-back role, something that he has shown again at times this season

Also his free-kicks and the goals that he has scored as been a real added bonus with a knack of getting a goal at keys moments in matches.

However, it doesn’t seem like he is the long-term option at full-back an could be replaced in the summer.

Rating: 7

Eduardo – Erm….

Well he didn’t… so let’s skip over this.

2017/18

Willy Caballero

Free transfer from Manchester City

Has been a pretty steady back-up for Chelsea over the last couple of seasons, which has been tested when he came in for Kepa during this campaign.

The veteran goalkeeper has been a decent stand-in when called upon, but he hasn’t had too much of a chance over the course of the last few years.

Rating: 6

Alvaro Morata

From Real Madrid, £60m

The then club-record signing started very well and got off to a flyer, including an impressive hat-trick in the win at Stoke City in his debut campaign

However, it was clear that he never truly settled in England and his performances and attitude dropped massively, often quite sulky on the pitch.

He made the move to Atletico, which was the right one for all parties, and he won’t be looked at massively favourably by Blues fans.

Rating: 5

Tiemoue Bakayoko

From Monaco, £36m

Bakayoko was one of the key members of Monaco’s superb side which reached the Champions League semi-final, however his Chelsea career is one to forget.

After struggling in his debut season with the club, he was then shipped on loan to AC Milan, followed by another season-long loan back in Monaco.

Bakayoko doesn’t seem to have any Chelsea future, and the signing can go down as a massively disappointing one.

Rating: 2

Danny Drinkwater

From Leicester City, £35m

It wasn’t a great time for Chelsea to sign midfielders under Conte, with Danny Drinkwater coming in and having very little effect.

The 30-year-old didn’t impress in his debut season, and then when Sarri came in he didn’t play a single competitive match, except for the Community Shield.

Drinkwater is trying to get his career back on track with loan spells at Burnley and Aston Villa, but really it is not working for him right now.

Again, another player whose future is away from Stamford Bridge and will go down as one of the strangest signings made.

Rating: 1

Davide Zappacosta

From Torino, £22m

An emergency signing late in the summer of 2017 when Conte needed a right-back to back up Victor Moses.

Conte admitted that he wanted Kyle Walker, but that was never going to happen and instead they got Zappacosta from Torino.

He had two bright moments, his goal against Qarabag and the clearance off the line against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League semi-final.

Rating: 4

Antonio Rudiger

From Roma, £32m

Chelsea fans took to him instantly with the type of performances that he put in and the effort that he showed.

He played on the left of a back three and was decent when he moved into the centre-back role with Luiz, but has struggled with injuries this season.

However, he remains an important part of the starting XI and has become one of the veteran players of the squad.

Rating: 7

Ethan Ampadu

From Exeter City, £2m

A very exciting prospect from the Blues as he moved into the first team and got his chance on a couple of occasions.

This season he was loaned out to RB Leipzig, which Lampard admitted that he was disappointed to see happen.

Ampadu has a big future ahead of him, but his development has stalled slightly after not playing much for the German side.

Rating: 5

Ross Barkley

From Everton, £15m

It was a difficult start for Barkley, signing in January 2018 off the back of a massive injury and only playing a handful of games for the rest of the season.

Under Sarri, it was a bit of a running joke that he would come on for Mateo Kovacic in the 60th minute, and he struggled to nail down a permanent place.

While he has struggled for starts this season, he has shown more recently just what a decent player he can be and the potential is there if he takes his chance.

Rating: 6

Emerson Palmieri

From Roma, 18m

Really struggled at first to get game time having come to west London off the back of a serious ACL injury.

He worked his way into the first team, playing a bit more regularly at the end of Sarri’s reign and the beginning of Lampard’s campaign.

However, he has lost his spot once again and it is likely that his future will be away from Stamford Bridge in the long-term.

Rating: 5

Olivier Giroud

From Arsenal, £15m

Conte was looking for a tall striker in January 2018, with names such as Ashley Barnes and Andy Carroll being bandied around.

The Frenchman ended up signing and has been a decent player for the Blues, especially in the Europa League campaign where he netted 11 goals and was key to them winning.

Underused this season, but showed with his performances when played that he can be a crucial player.

Rating: 7

2018/19

Mateo Kovacic

Initial loan from Real Madrid, permanent signing £40m

The Croatian had a difficult loan spell last season and didn’t really play to his full potential.

However, with the Blues having a transfer ban, they were still able to sign him on a permanent deal from Real Madrid.

This season he has been excellent, though, and been a key member of the squad over the course of the campaign.

Rating: 7

Kepa Arrizabalaga

From Athletic Bilbao, £71.6m

The world’s most expensive goalkeeper, however he hasn’t quite lived up to that billing just yet.

Of course, the big moment was the incident with Sarri during the Carabao Cup final last season.

There have been some good performances from the Spaniard, but also mixed with some poor ones and Chelsea are yet to really get their money’s worth.

Rating: 7

Rob Green

Free transfer

The hero of Baku… kind of. Didn’t play.

Rating: N/A

Jorginho

From Napoli, £52m

As part of the Sarri deal, Jorginho also joined from Napoli and slotted straight into the starting XI, playing in the holding role.

There are some question marks about his work in both final thirds, but his technical ability is excellent and he can control the tempo of the game.

Still a big part of the dressing room as vice-captain.

Rating: 7

Gonzalo Higuain

On loan from Juventus

Along with Kovacic, Chelsea had the chance to buy Gonzalo Higuain during the transfer ban, however they decided against it.

The Argentine never looked fully at home at Stamford Bridge and, although he scored a few goals, was never particularly accepted by the Chelsea faithful.

A disappointing short spell with the Blues.

Rating: 3

Christian Pulisic

From Borussia Dortmund, £58m

Signed during the Sarri reign in January 2019 but unable to join the Blues until the following summer, when the Italian had left.

Ha shown sparks of what he can do, but injuries have already stunted his progression with the club so far.

A bright future, though.
