Kansas State (3-0) vs. Oklahoma State (3-1) Game Preview
Why Kansas State Will Win
How is Kansas State able to get to 3-0 with a strong win at Mississippi State along the way? What is it doing that’s so right under new head coach Chris Klieman? Just about everything.
Kansas State has gone Kansas State. It’s dominating on third downs on both sides of the ball, it’s one of the best teams in the nation in fewest penalties, there aren’t a slew of turnovers, and the special teams are great. It might seem like the same thing every week when it comes to the Wildcats, but that’s the point – consistency is the key.
It’s great at taking teams out of their games, and they have to do that right away against the explosive Cowboys. They might be amazing offensively, but the defense is the worst among all Big 12 teams on third downs, it commits more penalties than any other team in the league, and it’s not big on time of possession.
Oklahoma State is the anti-Kansas State.
Why Oklahoma State Will Win
It hasn’t mattered too much so far, but Kansas State doesn’t have a pass rush. The defense has been amazing, and not setting its hair on fire to get into the backfield is a part of the plan, but getting to the Cowboy stars in the backfield is a must, and that’s not going to happen.
Chuba Hubbard leads the nation in rushing, Spencer Sanders has been brilliant in his dual-threat quarterback role, and the team has the ability to set a pace that Kansas State can’t keep up with. It’s not like the Wildcats aren’t explosive – they’re averaging close to nine yards per pass – but Oklahoma State plays a whole other game.
For all of the good things K-State does, it got hit by Mississippi State for over 200 yards on the ground. The Cowboys are going to hit that, but unlike the Bulldogs, they’ll push past 200 yards through the air, too.

What’s Going To Happen
This should be fun, because all Oklahoma State games are a blast. Just because Kansas State hasn’t played in a shootout doesn’t mean it can’t do it – it lit up miserable Bowling Green and Nicholls State teams before the win over Mississippi State.
The Wildcats will provide a 60-minute push, but Oklahoma State will be a wee bit better in this type of a game. At home, the Cowboys will overcome a few key mistakes to win the firefight.
