Kansas State (0-0) vs. Nicholls (0-0) Game Preview
Why Nicholls Will Win
The Colonels are used to dealing with Big 12 teams … sort of. They opened up last season with a. win over Kansas on the way to a huge year and a trip to the FCS Playoffs.
There might be a few key missing parts, but the formula will still be there – great run defense, great running game, lots of big plays in the backfield, dominate the time of possession. Basically, Nicholls likes to do what Kansas State would like to.
Kansas State needs the quarterback play to be a whole lot better and sharper – Skylar Thompson has to be fantastic – against a good-looking Colonel secondary. Last year, the Wildcats finished dead-last in the Big 12 in passing.
Why Kansas State Will Win
The O should be stronger under new offensive coordinator Courtney Messingham. New head coach Chris Klieman knows how to get an attack rolling, and now the team has former Ball State RB James Gilbert as part of what should be a strong rotation to steady the team a bit.
The passing game might have had a bad season, but the receiving corps is solid for Thompson to work with. Expect more downfield plays, and it starts against the Colonel secondary.
On the other side, don’t expect much of anything from the Nicholls passing game, and the Kansas State linebacking corps is good enough to keep the ground attack from taking control.
What’s Going To Happen
Kansas State won’t have any major issues. This is a good Colonel team that won’t be able to come up with enough big plays in the second half on third down.
The Wildcats won’t be devastating, but they’ll get up early and won’t have to sweat too much. Most importantly, the offensive balance will be enough to control the clock – Nicholls can’t lose the time of possession battle.
