Kansas rides new starting lineup to 95-57 victory over UNC Asheville

LAWRENCE, Kan. _ Bill Self wasn't kidding Wednesday when he said he might alter Kansas' starting lineup because of lack of production from bigs Carlton Bragg and Landen Lucas.

Self, KU's 14th-year coach did, indeed replace the frontcourt duo with Udoka Azubuike and Lagerald Vick, and the Jayhawks rolled to a 95-57 victory over UNC Asheville on Friday night in front of 16,300 fans in Allen Fieldhouse.

Freshman big man Azubuike scored a career-high 17 points on 8-of-9 shooting (seven on dunks), grabbed three rebounds and blocked three shots. Sophomore guard Vick tallied 15 points with nine boards, both career highs.

Lucas and Bragg, who again picked up two early fouls in coming off the bench the first time this season, scored six and four points, respectively. Lucas had four rebounds in 12 minutes; Bragg five rebounds in 12 minutes.

Devonte Graham dished out a career-best 11 assists to go with six points and six rebounds. Frank Mason tallied 21 points (5-of-5 on 3-pointers) with five rebounds and five assists, while Josh Jackson had 14 points and a career high seven assists.

Azubuike had five dunks and scored 11 points _ with three rebounds and a block _ in 14 minutes as KU rolled to a 47-21 halftime lead. Also in the half, Mason scored 14 points off 5-of-6 shooting, going 4 for 4 on threes, and Jackson had 10 points with five assists and four rebounds.

Vick also was effective in the initial half, with seven points and five boards in 15 minutes.

Bragg scored two points with two rebounds and Lucas had no points and one board the first 20 minutes. The duo played just 8 minutes combined in the half, each picking up two fouls.

Mason hit three 3s and Azubuike had four dunks in a 33-9 run to close the first half and bust open a 14-12 game.

Vick had two points and a rebound and Azubuike a block and three points out of the gate as KU, which was playing its fourth game in eight days, grabbed a 10-7 lead before the two starters took their first rest at 14:44.

Friday's game actually was part of the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, which KU won by beating UAB and Georgia on Monday and Tuesday at the Sprint Center. KU's victories over UNC Asheville and Siena were deemed "host" games of the event.

The Jayhawks also won the CBE Classic in 2016, when KU topped Saint Louis 73-59 in the title game. KU placed second in 2008, losing to Syracuse 89-81 in overtime in the final. Counting host games, KU is 11-1 all-time in the CBE.

KU also won its Champions Classic game against Duke 77-75 on Nov. 15 in New York. It recently was revealed that game attracted a live audience of 2,444,000 viewers, up 28 percent over last year's Kansas vs. Michigan State game in the event.

Friday's victory hiked Bill Self's record as a coach to 597-189. He is 390-84 at KU. The Jayhawks are 746-109 all-time in Allen Fieldhouse, 208-9 under Self.

Connor Vanover, a 7-2 junior center from Arkansas Baptist High in Little Rock, attended as part of an unofficial visit. He is unranked in the Class of 2018 by Rivals.com.

KU, 5-1, will next meet Long Beach State at 7 p.m. EST Tuesday at Allen Fieldhouse. Asheville fell to 3-3.
