Kansas holds on as Kansas State's last-second shot doesn't fall

LAWRENCE, Kan. _ Kansas continued its home dominance over Kansas State in the Sunflower Showdown on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The No. 12-ranked Jayhawks (14-3, 4-1 Big 12) edged the Wildcats (12-5, 2-3), 73-72, for their 12th straight victory over their rivals in Lawrence.

In all, 10 of those victories have been by double figures.

However, Saturday's contest was not one of those lopsided final margins. In fact, it came down to the final seconds.

KU sophomore guard Malik Newman hit a pair of free throws after a drive to the goal and foul by Makol Mawien with 15.2 seconds left, giving the Jayhawks a 73-72 lead. K-State had called a timeout before his second of two free throws to try to ice him.

On K-State's final possession, Barry Brown let the clock run close to zero before misfiring on a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, the game ending with KU on top by one.

Devonte Graham scored 23 points, Udoka Azubuike 18, Svi Mykhailiuk 11 and Lagerald Vick 10 for the Jayhawks, who now have now won two straight games overall in Allen Fieldhouse after losing two of three games there.

Dean Wade had 22 points, Cartier Diarra a career-high 18 (16 in the second half), Xavier Sneed 14 and Brown 12 for Kansas State, which fell to 2-12 overall versus KU in the Bruce Weber era.

KU hit 49 percent of its shots, including 10 of 23 from 3 and 15 of 17 from the line. K-State hit 49.1 percent, including 8 of 21 from 3 and 10 of 11 from the line.

Graham scored nine points in an 11-0 surge that broke a 38-38 tie and gave KU a 49-38 lead at 13:29. He had two 3s in the run.

However, Diarra scored 11 points in a 17-6 run that erased that 11-point deficit to tie the score at 55 with 8:27 left.

Mykhailiuk hit a pair of 3s in the final 37 seconds of the first half to erase a six-point deficit and send the teams into the locker room tied at 34-34.

Mykhailiuk had 11 points in the half, KU's only player in double figures. He hit three 3s as KU made 6 of 13 in the half to KSU's 4 of 13. Silvio De Sousa, who was making his KU debut after getting cleared by the NCAA on Saturday morning, had one turnover and a foul in four minutes the first half. He entered with KU up, 21-13 at 9:44 and left when the game was tied, 21-21, at 6:05.

Wade had 11 points and five rebounds, while Sneed had 10 points and four boards the first half for KSU, which hit 48.3 percent of its shots to KU's 44.0.

Weber called a time out at 16:57 after the Jayhawks grabbed an 8-2 lead. Malik Newman and Graham had 3s in the early surge. KU upped the lead to 13-4. However, Graham left the game with two fouls at 12:33 and KU up, 15-9. He still played 17 minutes in the half.

Sneed scored five points and Wade three as KSU used an 8-0 run to tie the score at 21 with 6:05 left in the half. Graham's 3 gave KU a 24-21 lead at 5:40. However, KSU embarked on an 8-0 run and led, 29-24, at 3:07. Wade had four points, while Sneed and Brown had two in that run.

KU was able to tie the score at half thanks to Mykhailiuk's 3s.
