Kansas gains frontcourt depth with addition of grad transfer Jack Whitman

Jack Whitman, a 6-foot-9 forward from William & Mary, will play his senior year next season at Kansas as a graduate transfer, he told The Star on Tuesday.

Whitman averaged 10.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season, his redshirt junior year at William & Mary, located in Williamsburg, Va. About a month and a half ago he decided to transfer and had visits set up to North Carolina, Clemson and George Washington. His visits to UNC and Clemson were canceled "for different reasons," he said.

"Kansas I felt was the right fit. I didn't need to visit," Whitman told The Star. "I will work as hard as I possibly can to earn whatever I can. I'm not expecting to play any certain number of minutes.

"I'm excited. An opportunity like this to play at Kansas doesn't come often.

"I'm looking forward to getting out there. I don't know any of the current players. I'm looking forward to being part of the tradition next year."

Whitman, from Lexington (Ky.) Catholic High School, shot 104 for 157 from the field last season (66.2 percent) and 59.2 percent from the free-throw line. He blocked 33 shots in 29 games.
