Former Kansas guard Frank Mason capped his storybook 2016-17 senior season Thursday night by being taken by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the NBA draft.
Mason, a 5-foot-11 native of Petersburg, Va., who was chosen consensus college basketball player of the year after averaging 20.9 points and 5.2 assists per game for (31-5) KU, was the 34th player selected overall in the two-round draft held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Mason, the Big 12's player of the year and KU's 29th consensus first-team All-America selection, led the league in scoring (21.0 mark in conference games). He was named the 2016-17 national player of the year by 10 different entities: Wooden, Naismith, NABC, Associated Press, USBWA Oscar Robertson, Sporting News, CBS Sports, USA Today, Bleacher Report and NBC Sports. He was the first Jayhawk chosen Associated Press Player of the Year and the first KU recipient of both the Oscar Robertson Trophy presented by the USBWA and the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award.
