At least one person has died and 15 have been injured in a shooting outside a US nightclub.

The shooting took place shortly before midnight local time at the 9ine Ultra Lounge in Kansas City, which was full of people celebrating the playoff victory of American football team Kansas City Chiefs.

Reports suggest the shooter also died after he was gunned down by an armed security guard when he opened fire on a line of people waiting to enter the bar.

One woman was found dead in the parking lot while at least 15 people showed up to local hospitals with injuries from the shooting.

At least three people were in critical condition, police said.

Police found "a chaotic scene" and had to call in help from depots around the city.

Officers believe the shooter is one of those who died. The motive for the shooting wasn't immediately clear.

The scene was near US Highway 40.

A Facebook post on the club's page advertised Sunday night's "Sold Out Sundays" event, which appeared to be a celebration of the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs - featured on the event's artwork - beat the Tennessee Titans on Sunday winning the AFC Championship to advance to the Super Bowl.
