Kansas City Chiefs Release WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling, per Report

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting down to business following a Super Bowl LVIII victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Andy Reid and Co. have opted to release wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

The move comes less than three weeks after the team captured its third NFL title in five years.

Releasing Valdes-Scantling will save Kansas City $12 million against the salary cap, and the move comes after the wide receiver’s solid performance during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run. Valdes-Scantling caught eight of 13 targets for 128 yards in the postseason, including a touchdown catch in the Super Bowl.

Valdes-Scantling was the highest-paid offensive free agent signing by the Chiefs in 2022. He inked a three-year, $30 million deal with a reported $15 million guaranteed. But after catching 42 passes for 687 yards and two scores in 2022, his numbers regressed this past year. The former Green Bay Packers wideout finished the ’23 campaign with 21 catches for 315 yards and one touchdown over 16 regular-season games.

The 29-year-old spent the first four seasons of his NFL career in Green Bay, totaling 123 receptions for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns.
