TEAM NEEDS

Jay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY Sports

Edge Rusher

After the departures of Dee Ford and Justin Houston, adding a talented edge rusher may be atop of the Chiefs’ pressing needs. Adding Alex Okafor in free agency was a good start, but more needs to happen to ensure that they have the position solidified.

Cornerback

The Chiefs led the league in sacks in 2018 but still allowed the second-most passing yards in the league. The reason for that lies in a secondary. An already-weak cornerback depth chart was weakened even more when Steven Nelson signed with the Steelers. Even though they added Bashaud Breeland, Kansas City needs to upgrade the slim cornerback room.

Center

The Chiefs lost center Mitch Morse to the Bills in free agency. Austin Reiter is the next man up on the depth chart. Even though he did play a few games in 2018, it’s unlikely that they rely on him to be the long-term starter at the position.

Safety

Aside from newcomer Tyrann Mathieu, the Chiefs have a lot of questions at the safety position. Jordan Lucas was the most consistent safety out of the bunch. Armani Watts showed flashes of a good centerfield safety before going down to a season-ending core muscle injury. Eric Murray and Daniel Sorensen are only liabilities.

Tight End

The Chiefs still need to add depth at this position. Travis Kelce is coming off an ankle surgery, but should be back to normal at the beginning of the 2019 season. Behind him, there’s no one on Kansas City’s roster that can be relied on if Kelce were to go down.
