Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Keiichi Ishii announced Tuesday that the period required to repair the bridge connecting Kansai Airport with the mainland, damaged by a tanker crashing into it during Typhoon No. 21, has been shortened from the initially planned four weeks to three weeks. West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) and Nankai Electric Railway Co., which provide access to Kansai Airport, are to resume services within this month.
The bridge consists of rail and highway sections. One of the highway spans was knocked sideways in the tanker crash and ended up on top of the railway. At first the period needed to clear it off the tracks was estimated at two weeks, but it has been found that the removal can be finished about a week.
Ishii also announced that flights previously scheduled for Kansai Airport, including international ones, will be shifted to Osaka Airport (also known as Itami Airport) and Kobe Airport.
