Kanpur: Criminal injured in encounter

KANPUR: An alleged criminal sustained bullet injuries in an encounter with the police in Nawabganj area of the city late on Monday night. One of his accomplices however managed to flee the spot. According to police, the criminal identified as Sanjay, a resident of Nawabganj area, is a listed history-sheeter.

“During the encounter, the criminal got shot in the leg, after which the police arrested him and admitted him to Lala Lajpat Rai hospital from where he was later sent to jail. One of his aides however managed to escape,” said DCP West BBGTS Murti. After receiving the information on the movement of some suspects, the police team of Nawabganj and SWAT laid a trap at the Ganga Barrage-Bithoor road area late Monday night. Later, two suspects riding a two-wheeler appeared, the police said.

The police team asked the riders to stop the vehicle.The miscreants however allegedly opened fire on the police, forcing the police to return fire, injuring one of the suspects. DCP said that the injured rider identified as Sanjay is a history-sheeter of Nawabganj police station. There are about three dozen cases including robbery, Gangster Act and Goonda Act registered against him across several police stations of the district. “A reward of ten thousand rupees was also on him,” said DCP further .
