Court attack on journalist by kangaroo killer's supporter ends in fine and suspended jail term

Mark Musa Bhatti has pleaded guilty to assaulting the ABC journalist in February this year.

A man who hit and spat on a journalist during a violent scuffle outside a Perth court has been given a seven-month suspended jail sentence and fined $1,000.

Mark Musa Bhatti, 29, attacked the ABC reporter outside the Joondalup Magistrates Court in January.

Bhatti was at the courthouse to support Dylan Griffin, who had admitted taking part in what was described as the "sadistic" torture and killing of a kangaroo.

Griffin, 22, was sentenced to 11 months in jail, and as his supporters left the courthouse Bhatti and Griffin's father, Leslie Thomas Griffin, lashed out at the media.

Leslie Griffin swore at and struck a Channel 7 cameraman with an open hand while Bhatti hit and spat on the ABC journalist.

The journalist suffered a black eye and a bloodied lip.

Bhatti initially pleaded not guilty to two assault charges, and had been due to face a two-day trial in the Joondalup Magistrates Court next week.

But the case was brought on early and he changed his pleas to guilty.

Bhatti is a member of the Outlaws motorcycle gang.

Griffin, 56, pleaded guilty at an early opportunity and was fined $1,200 in March.

He was also ordered to pay more than $600 to the camera operator as compensation for the damage to his property.
