Kangaroo hops through empty Australian streets amid coronavirus lockdown

A kangaroo was spotted hopping through the empty streets of Adelaide amid the coronavirus lockdown.

South Australia Police captured the footage of the animal taking in the sights of the city's downtown area.

Despite the number of Covid-19 cases falling, Australia still has strict "lockdown" rules in most areas.

Only one vehicle is seen in the footage of the city and the animal is last seen bouncing away through the empty streets.

Posting on Twitter, the police force joked that they were "tracking a suspect wearing a grey fur coat" and he was last seen on foot heading into the West Parklands.

It comes as three beaches in Sydney re-opened after New South Wales recorded just six new cases.

Legislation differs in each state, but most have brought in sweeping new laws restricting social gatherings and stay-at-home orders.

Like the UK, people are being urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to exercise locally.

Earlier this month, a group in the city of Port Augusta in South Australia were fined more than A$11,000 (£5,500) for holding a backyard party during the lockdown.

Police warned that people outside their homes without a valid excuse will receive a heavy fine.
