Kane Williamson has stepped down as New Zealand Test captain, with experienced bowler Tim Southee named as his replacement.

Williamson, widely considered one of the best batters of his generation, will go down as one of the Black Caps’ finest leaders.

The 32-year-old took charge of the Test side in 2016 and has led the team in 40 Tests, 22 of them victories, with eight draws and 10 defeats. The highlight of his reign came in winning the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.

“For me, test cricket is the pinnacle of the game and I’ve enjoyed the challenges of leading the side in the format,” said Williamson.

“Captaincy comes with an increased workload on and off the field and at this stage of my career I feel the time is right for this decision.”

Williamson will continue to play for the Test side and will retain the captaincy of both limited-overs formats, with an ODI World Cup in India to come next year and New Zealand seeking to go one better than their agonising defeat by England in the 2019 final.

Southee has previously stood in for Williamson as captain in numerous T20Is and will start the permanent Test role immediately ahead of this month’s series against Pakistan.

“It’s been a surreal few days and it’s just a massive honour to be appointed as test captain,” Southee said. “I love test cricket, it’s the ultimate challenge and I’m really excited by the opportunity to lead the team in this format.”
