Kane Williamson breaks Ross Taylor's record, becomes New Zealand's highest Test run-scorer

NEW DELHI: Kane Williamson on Monday surpassed Ross Taylor to become New Zealand's leading run-scorer in Tests. Williamson achieved the feat during Day 4 of the second Test match against England at Basin Reserve in Wellington.

The former New Zealand captain hit England pacer James Anderson towards midwicket for a boundary to get past Taylor's record of 7,683 runs in Tests. Taylor retired from international cricket last year after playing 112 Tests.

Williamson raised his bat fleetingly to acknowledge an ovation from the Wellington crowd after reaching 29 not out.

Taylor, who played 112 Tests and scored 7684 runs at an average of 44.16, including 19 centuries, 3 double tons and 35 fifties, took to Twitter and congratulated Williamson.

"Congratulations Kane for becoming NZ’s highest Test run-scorer. This achievement is a testament to your hard work and dedication to Test Cricket, of which I was privy to for a number of years. Here’s to many more ," Taylor wrote on his Twitter handle.

Williamson reached the milestone in his 92nd Test and 161st innings -- considerably quicker than Taylor's 112 Tests and 196 visits to the crease.

With 7,172 runs, Stephen Fleming is third in the tally.

Williamson sits 38th on the all-time Test leaderboard. Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 15,921 runs.
