Kane's position and Mourinho's substitutions - 5 things spotted in Tottenham's win over West Ham

Kane's position

Harry Kane was extremely quiet on his return to the team last Friday against Manchester United.

Much was made about his comeback from the hamstring injury he suffered on New Year's Day but he just couldn't have an impact on proceedings.

It was much of the same early on against West Ham as he only had a couple of half chances in the first period, with some better openings coming after the restart.

What was noticeable was that Kane was dropping incredibly deep to get on the ball despite having the likes of Lucas Moura, Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso behind him.

Jose Mourinho admits Steven Bergwijn wasn't first choice

Clearly frustrated to not be getting on the ball in and around the 18-yard box, the England captain was dropping incredibly deep and it's not where he should be on the pitch as he needs to be in the positions where he can make a real difference.

Thankfully he got the goal he desperately craved in the 82nd minute as he finished expertly following a brilliant pass from Son.

Strength in depth

Mourinho was boosted by the return of Alli and Lucas for the game against West Ham.

Having the duo available again after suspension and injury respectively meant that the Spurs boss could name an extremely strong starting XI and substitutes' bench.

That hasn't always been the case for Mourinho, and Mauricio Pochettino before him, but the return of the attackers highlighted how good a squad Spurs have.

Paulo Gazzaniga, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Ryan Sessegnon, Harry Winks, Erik Lamela, Tanguy Ndombele. Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn were all named on the bench, with Oliver Skipp and Harvey White the unlucky two to miss out from Friday evening.

That's some bench Mourinho named and many of those will have felt incredibly unfortunate to not make the starting team.

It's a squad game, however, and all will no doubt play a part for Spurs over the remaining seven games of the campaign.

The only issue for Mourinho is that he will only be able to name seven on the bench from next season and that means he's going to have a bit of a dilemma on his hands once more.

Mourinho's defensive decision

It appears that Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier are now Mourinho's first-choice pairing at the heart of defence.

The duo, who started on Friday against Manchester United, once again got the nod despite the boss having Alderweireld and Vertonghen to choose from.

Mourinho did make three changes following the quick turnaround in fixtures but his changes all came further upfield.

Alderweireld was a regular at centre-back under Mourinho prior to the break in play but it now looks like he has a fight on his hands to win his place back in the team.

There has been an awful lot of chopping and changing in defence over the course of the season and it appears Mourinho has settled on his centre-back pairing for the time being at least.

Mourinho's substitutions

Many Spurs fans questioned the manager's decision to only use two substitutes from a possible five against Manchester United.

Lo Celso and Gedson Fernandes were introduced in the closing stages of the game, with Tanguy Ndombele having to watch all the game from the sidelines.

However, in contrast, United used all five of their substitutes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer freshened things up.

Well, it seems that Mourinho isn't going to following in the footsteps of other managers as he only made three changes this evening.

Spurs have plenty of players on the bench such as Gedson, Bergwijn and Ndombele who can have an impact on proceedings but the head coach elected against shaking things up too much.

Making his changes in three different slots, Ndombele once again went without minutes despite the head coach praising him prior to the return of football.

All eyes will be on the Sheffield United game next week to see if he changes his ways.

Mourinho's love for Lucas

Friday's game against Manchester United was the first time that Lucas hadn't played in a Mourinho Tottenham team.

The Brazilian had featured in all 26 of the head coach's games in charge prior to the United clash, with injury unfortunately stopping him from making it 27 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Mourinho is a huge fan of the Brazilian player and he put him straight back into the side ahead of Bergwjn for the West Ham game.

Moura may have struggled to find his best form throughout his Spurs career but one thing for sure is that Mourinho absolutely loves him.
