Kamala Harris recently said that people making fun of her loud laugh is really about sexism. She shared these thoughts on the Rich Little Broke Girls podcast, where she also gave dating advice to young women.
According to the NY Post, the former Vice President explained that the constant attacks on her laugh come from an old-fashioned view of how women should act. A reporter once asked her about claims that she wasn’t humble enough. Harris said she doesn’t try to be humble, even though humility matters.
“I don’t aspire to be humble. Humility, yes, is very important,” Harris said. “[It’s] a very dated perspective on who women should be. To say, women should be humble. Women should be quiet. Women should laugh quietly,” she added. Harris showed how silly this is by covering her mouth and raising her eyebrows. These expectations are ridiculous and unfair to place on anyone.
Harris has never let outdated standards hold her back
Harris added that these old rules say women shouldn’t have a sense of humor or raise their voices. But she said these standards have never weighed her down. “I have never felt burdened by those very dated, and I think out-of-touch standards,” she stated.
This honest talk about gender issues marks a change for Harris. During her 107-day presidential campaign, she avoided discussing identity politics. She was the first female Vice President and the second woman to run for president from a major party.

But she didn’t focus much on these historic achievements during her campaign, unlike Hillary Clinton who often talked about breaking glass ceilings. Harris has previously criticized her party for outdated approaches while seeking her own recognition.
The podcast wasn’t just about politics. Harris also shared helpful dating advice for young single women. Her main point was to find someone who is truly kind. She’s been more open in recent interviews, though she’s faced tough questions about Biden that she struggled to answer.
She told listeners to pick a partner who lets them laugh at themselves and each other. Find someone you enjoy doing boring tasks with. “Choose to be with someone who you know you like, going to the grocery store together, taking a walk together,” she said.
Harris married Doug Emhoff in 2014 when she was in her 40s. She talked about different relationship phases. Sometimes you want a fun “Friday night relationship,” and other times you need a steady “Sunday morning relationship.” She said timing is key. “Doug and I got married in our 40s, and I love my husband so very much. He is my best friend,” she shared. If they had met in their 20s, they might not have worked out because they weren’t ready for each other yet.
