Kalvin Phillips wins first England cap as Leeds United midfielder starts against Denmark

Kalvin Phillips will win his first England cap tonight after Gareth Southgate named the Leeds United midfielder in his side to face Denmark.

The Three Lions face the Danes in a Nations League clash in Copenhagen following Saturday night's 1-0 win in Iceland.

Phillips was named in his first England squad of any age group for the current double-header and will get the chance the prove himself on the international stage tonight for the first time.

Southgate has named an experimental starting XI, where he is set to operate with three at the back, while Phillips will play in central midfield alongside Declan Rice and wear the number seven shirt.

Wolves defender Connor Cody also makes his England debut, while Liverpool duo Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold also start, ahead of Leeds trip to Anfield on Saturday evening.

Phillips emerged on Southgate's radar during an excellent two seasons under Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship, as he became a key part of the Leeds team that were finally promoted back to the Premier League last season.

The 24-year-old is still to make his Premier League debut and joins the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Jay Bothroyd, David Nugent, Kevin Phillips and Micky Gray in making their England bow while playing below Premier League level in recent years.

He also becomes the first Leeds player to start for England since Danny Mills played against Slovakia in June 2003.

England XI to face Denmark: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Trippier, Coady, Gomez, Dier, Phillips, Rice, Kane, Sterling, Sancho

Subs: Mings, Pope, Keane, Maitland-Niles, Ward-Prowse, Grealish, Mount, Abraham, Ings, Henderson
