Kalvin Phillips still confident Leeds can finally end 16-year Premier League exile

Kalvin Phillips claims it would be a dream to win promotion with his beloved Leeds because it would mean so much to his family.

Phillips grew up in a family of Leeds fans and has been with his hometown club for the last decade since he was 14.

The midfielder was reared on stories of Billy Bremner and David Batty and is desperate to be part of the team that ends their 16-year exile from the Premier League.

“It would be a dream come true,” he said when asked what winning promotion would mean to him.

“When I started playing for Leeds, I never thought I might be in the team to get us promoted to the Premier League.

“We had a chance last year, but it fizzled out towards the end.

“This year we know that, I know that, it’s a massive thing for me, a massive thing for my family and that’s pushing me on to do better and better.”

Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship leaders need 13 more points to guarantee promotion ahead of today’s clash with Blackburn at Ewood Park and Phillips claims everyone wants to beat Leeds.

He claims this will be Blackburn’s biggest game of the season and says Leeds must be prepared.

“I think it will be a good game and if we play like we have been doing in the last couple of games, I’m pretty sure we will get the three points,” he said.

“Any team that we come up against really won’t want us to win and it’s not just Blackburn, it’s every team.

“We’re at the top of the league, so when we come to them, it’s going to be their biggest game of the season.

“I think it’s going to be like that in every game until the end of the season, obviously we’ve been working hard all season and we know what to expect and we’re looking forward to try and get the three points.”

Leeds had a wobble against Luton on Tuesday when they could only draw at home to the bottom club, but Phillips claims the players still remain confident.

“We did not play our best free-flowing football,” he said.

“But if that Luton result was swapped for our win over Fulham and we had drawn with Fulham and beaten Luton 3-0, there would not be so much panic.”
