Kalvin Phillips signs for Man City in £45m transfer from Leeds

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds in a deal worth up to £45million.

The England international will cost £42m, with a further £3m in performance-related add-ons.

Phillips has signed a six-year deal to become City’s third summer signing - after Erling Haaland and Stefan Ortega Moreno - and has taken former captain Vincent Kompany’s old shirt number.

“I am absolutely delighted to have joined Manchester City," he said. "City have again proved to be the best team in the country with an amazing squad and a manager in Pep Guardiola who is rightly considered to be the finest in the world.

“To be able to play under Pep and learn from him and his coaching staff as well as be part of such a fantastic squad is a prospect that I am incredibly excited about. City are a world-class club with world-class staff and facilities and it’s a dream come true to have joined the club.

“Now I can’t wait to get started and to look to try and help the team to go on and achieve more success.”

On taking on the No.4 shirt, he added: “I just think it was a shirt that was presented to me and a number that was presented to me. At Leeds I had 23 which is one of my favourite numbers.

"I thought because it is a new start, I want a different number and try to build a legacy with that number. Hopefully I can.

“I had scored a few goals before [Marcelo Bielsa came to Leeds], so I thought I was more of a number eight. He came in and told me straight away that I was a number four. He saw into the future!”
