Kalvin Phillips mural in a "different league" to previous work says artist

Kalvin Phillips' torso has been emphatically emblazoned on the side of a 12-metre high building on The Calls in Leeds city centre this past week, courtesy of Leeds United's new partnership with US entertainment brand Roc Nation.

The mural was the unveiling showpiece for the club's relationship with the American company, which director of football Victor Orta hopes will help put Leeds on the map in the States.

Akse P19, the street artist responsible for the Kalvin mural, revealed how pleased he was with the speed of his work, but also the impact he hopes it will have on the city of Leeds.

"It’s my first time in Leeds, [the] first time I come to paint here, and it’s one of the biggest I’ve painted so it was a big challenge only in seven days but it’s been great and I’m glad it’s completed now."

The paint had hardly begun to dry when the Frenchman was hoisted down from his cherry-picker to be congratulated by Victor Orta and the Leeds United media team who were gathered ready to officially unveil the mural.

Speaking to LeedsLive, Akse P19 stated it was a challenge, and the degree of difficulty did not compare to previous, easier projects.

"I’ve done similar size back in Manchester, it was for Puma, Harry Maguire but the design was much simpler, it was not photorealistic it was more like a 2D type so it was easier.

"[I did it] in four days, same size, all the wall covered but that [Kalvin] was a different league," he insisted, nodding to the mural which sees pioneering South African Albert Johanneson above Phillips' right shoulder and Lucas Radebe above his left.

Kalvin himself has taken to social media to celebrate the artist's latest work too. He most recently painted a smaller scale mural of Manchester United's Marcus Rashford, and recognises the gravity that artwork depicting a local player can have for the community.

"Each time I start a large mural like that I’m worried and under pressure, like I really want to deliver but with time constraints it’s always tricky.

"I’m really happy with the outcome and I’ve seen Kalvin posted the pictures so I’m glad he likes it as well."

There is a strong sense of relief in Akse P19's voice as he admires his latest work. Leeds United fans were heard beeping their car horns and stopping briefly at the roadside to take pictures with the mural throughout the period spent at the unveiling.

"I feel honoured and very proud they have picked me for the work, and I’m glad I came to Leeds to paint the mural and there will be more to come."

There is a real sense of pride, if not from the humble artist, then certainly from Leeds United supporters, that their midfield conductor - alongside two historic club figures - now stands proudly watching over the city.
