Kala Jathedi gang member held after a brief shootout in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have arrested a 26-year-old alleged member of Kala Jathedi gang following a brief exchange of fire in Baba Haridas Nagar on Friday.

The arrested man had allegedly attempted to extort Rs 20 lakh from a man in Jathedi's name and had recently opened fire at his house to threaten him, senior police officers said.

The arrested man has been identified as Iqbal alias Mikku, a resident of Roshan Pura in Najafgarh. He was previously involved in eight criminal cases, including those of theft and under the Arms Act, police said.

The complainant Balvinder, a resident of Baba Haridas Enclave, told police that on ignoring an extortion call, some men opened fire outside his house.

DCP (Dwarka) Shankar Choudhary said the cops received an input on Friday that a gang member Iqbal alias Mikku, who is involved in the extortion and firing case, will come to Dichaon Road to meet his associates.

"Iqbal arrived around 12.30am on Friday and, on seeing the cops, fired at them. During the exchange of fire, two rounds were fired by the criminal and three rounds were retaliated by the police team. Out of three bullets fired by the police team, one bullet pierced through the ankle of the accused. He was overpowered and arrested," Chaudhary said.
