OSAKA -- Yokozuna Kakuryu and ozeki Takakeisho were upset on Day 2 of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday in Osaka, which is being held without spectators due to the spread of the coronavirus.
In the last bout of the day, komusubi Hokutofuji (1-1) dodged the initial attack of Kakuryu (1-1), who was then forced to straighten up his body and was pushed out at the Edion Arena Osaka.
Yokozuna Hakuho (2-0), aiming to extend his record for career championships with a 44th title, slapped the head of No. 1 maegashira Daieisho (0-2) at the start and threw him down without having to grab hold of his belt.
Just before Hakuho's bout, lone ozeki Takakeisho was thrown down by No. 2 maegashira Okinoumi (1-1).
Earlier, No. 2 maegashira Tokushoryu, who won his first Emperor's Cup at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo in January, lost his second consecutive bout. After the jump off, Tokushoryu tried to grab the right hand of sekiwake Asanoyama (2-0), who is seeking promotion to ozeki, but Asanoyama dodged the attempt and pulled Tokushoryu down.
Meanwhile, No. 4 maegashira Enho, a 168-centimeter wrestler, grabbed the belt of 191-centimeter No. 5 maegashira Ryuden (1-1) and threw him down to earn his first victory in the basho.
