Yokozuna Kakuryu's attempt to win a second straight championship suffered a blow on Wednesday as he recorded his first loss of the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
Kakuryu (3-1) and Shohozan (1-3) exchanged slaps squarely in the middle of the ring until the No. 2 maegashira pushed the yokozuna down as he tried to dodge Shohozan's push.
In other action on Day 4, yokozuna Hakuho and the two sekiwake of Tochinoshin and Ichinojo kept their slates clean. Hakuho took just a few seconds to send No. 1 maegashira Kaisei to the surface. Tochinoshin made fast work of forcing komusubi Mitakeumi (2-2) out. Ichinojo also made it look easy, getting a tight grip on the belt of No. 3 maegashira Yutakayama (0-4) to force the maegashira out.
