Kaja Choma: Tributes to "beautiful soul" with "zest for life" as death shocks industry

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a much-loved Belfast videographer and TEDxStormont co-organiser who has been called a "beautiful soul" with a "zest for life".

Kaja Choma was well known across Northern Ireland through her work as a videographer as well as her role as producer and co-organiser of TEDxStormont.

News of her death sent shockwaves through the community on Friday evening.

DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, Belfast's Lord Mayor Kate Nicholl and TV presenter Sarah Travers were among the hundreds who have paid tribute to the popular TEDxStormont co-organiser.

Chris Brown, of PR firm Brown O’Connor Communications, said everyone was "absolutely devastated", having worked with Kaja through their role with TEDxStormont.

"She really was part of our team and will be dearly missed. She has been been part of our success and a brilliant person and it’s very hard believe this has happened," he wrote in tribute on Twitter.

Arlene O'Connor added: "A force of nature and a joy to be around. A total pro in every way. We will never meet anyone like her again."

Emma Little-Pengelly, former DUP MP for South Belfast, wrote on Twitter: "I am so sorry to say that this beautiful, bright light is no longer with us. Her passing has come as a massive shock and with much sadness. Gone too soon. This beautiful soul will be remembered with much love."

Mr Donaldson shared this message, adding: "How terribly tragic to see this beautiful young life, with so much potential, end so suddenly."

Belfast's Lord Mayor Kate Nicholl also shared her condolences, writing: "Awful news - Kaja was a delight. Thoughts very much with her family and friends."

Kaja moved to Northern Ireland in 2005 from Oświęcim in Poland and settled with her family in Dungannon. As well as her work in the media, Kaja was a fitness trainer and health advocate.

She also created Zdrowy (meaning healthy) Lifestyle, a Polish fitness initiative that aimed to build a supportive and nurturing environment for Polish in Northern Ireland.

She did her own TED talk in 2016, called A fish climbing a tree - How to embrace being different.

Friends and colleagues have taken to social media to pay tribute to the much-loved videographer.

One wrote: " Beautiful, funny and one of the most talented people I’ve had the pleasure to know. I’m truly heartbroken. You had too much to give."

Another added: "The saddest news imaginable for all who had the privilege of knowing Kaja & being touched by her passion, her zest for life, her generous spirit and her gentle soul. The world is without doubt a duller place without Kaja in it."
