Kai Kennedy wanted by Roma as Rangers face battle to keep rising star at Ibrox

Roma are weighing up a sensational move for Rangers starlet Kai Kennedy.

Record Sport understands the Serie A giants are extremely keen on taking the teenager to Italy despite the fact he has yet to feature in a first team Premiership game.

The 17 year-old left winger thrust himself on to the radar of European football’s heavyweights in February when Rangers Under-17s won the prestigious Al Kass International Cup in Qatar.

Scotland Under-17 star Kennedy was named player of the tournament and also scored the decisive spot-kick in a shoot-out as Rangers triumphed 9-8 in the final against Roma.

In a tournament also featuring Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich, it was Gers who became the first British side to lift the trophy.

After the victory Kennedy, tweeted: “Unreal feeling to win it on pens and score the winner. Buzzing to get player of the tournament.”

Kennedy - who is contracted to Rangers until 2021 - has been widely tipped as a star of the future.

However, Rangers now face a mighty fight to keep the youngster in Scotland as his exploits in Qatar clearly impressed the Roma hierarchy.

Rangers and the Italians have previously done business when Nigerian striker Umar Sadiq signed a year-long loan for Steven Gerrard’s men last summer.

However Sadiq made just four first team appearances in all competitions and his loan spell was cancelled in December.

Roma remain firmly in the hunt for Kennedy and hope to tempt him into making the switch to the Stadio Olimpico.

It would be a massive blow to Rangers if they were to lose out on yet another one of the clubs potential rising stars.

The club suffered a blow when Billy Gilmour quit Ibrox to join Chelsea back in 2017.
