Kai Havertz set huge challenge to solve Chelsea's 'biggest mystery' as Erling Haaland point made

Chelsea have struggled in a number of key areas this season. Todd Boehly has spent over £600million in the last two transfer windows but has failed to bring in a striker that guarantees goals.

Kai Havertz has scored just nine goals in 40 appearances this season, whilst summer signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has only notched three in 20 games. Armando Broja suffered a season-ending injury during the World Cup break, whilst Aubameyang was omitted from Chelsea's Champions League squad for the knockout rounds.

football.london understands Christopher Nkunku has signed a pre-contract agreement with the west Londoners and is set to complete a move to Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig this summer. The Frenchman has shown over a number of seasons that he is capable of scoring double figures and he could solve Chelsea's attacking issues next term.

Michael Owen has described the Blues' lack of striker signing - despite spending over £600million on new signings - as one of the 'biggest mysteries' of all time and admitted Frank Lampard's side look 'toothless'. Speaking to BT Sport ahead of Chelsea's crucial Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash against Real Madrid, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker said: "It’s one of the biggest mysteries of all time [Chelsea not signing a new striker], isn’t it?

"How you can spend over £500million and hardly bring a player in that is going to influence the goalscoring department. They look so toothless in front of goal they don’t really look like scoring in many ways.

"I was reading some of the notes before the game, Erling Haaland has scored four goals or five goals more than the entire team this season - it’s quite incredible for a team like Chelsea to have somebody that’s not banging them in on a regular basis. Tonight, it has to be different.

"It has to be a different mentality. I don’t know where they’re going to come from but they have to come from somewhere."

Chelsea signed the likes of Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke in the last two transfer windows, but none of those signings have helped the Blues in the goal scoring department. Manchester City signed Erling Haaland last summer and the Norwegian striker has already equalled the Premier League record for most goals scored in a 38-game season - whilst looking set to continue breaking records in his debut season at the Etihad Stadium - and the west Londoners would do anything to have a striker of that quality in their squad.

When discussing Havertz's ability and what he wants to see from the German forward more often, Owen replied: "Well, obviously goals. He’s a classy player, he misses chances don’t get me wrong, but I like him as a player.

"I just think he needs to be given chances. This Chelsea team isn’t really set up to make many chances, on paper tonight it looks quite a negative team, however if they can get a grip, tactically, of that midfield, get their wing-backs forward and start crossing the ball, Havertz is brilliant on crosses."
