Kai Havertz returns but no Timo Werner - Things noticed from Chelsea training ahead of Newcastle

After another tedious international break, Chelsea are back in Premier League action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Newcastle United.

The Blues make the long trip to St James' Park for the early-afternoon kick-off and were back in training on Thursday.

It's been a frustrating international break for Blues boss Frank Lampard, not having the players available to work on tactics for the upcoming game.

But what did we learn from the training session ahead of the game?

Frank Lampard relies on Mason Mount's qualities

Kai Havertz returns

Kai Havertz was really finding his feet with the Blues before he tested positive for coronavirus ahead of the Champions League match with Rennes.

The 21-year-old also missed the Premier League win over Sheffield United and the Germany matches in the international break.

Havertz has spent the last few weeks recovering and he was back in training on his own ahead of the Newcastle United game.

The German is still a doubt for the game at St James’ Park due to fitness levels, but he should be ready for the Champions League match with Rennes in midweek.

No Timo Werner

One player who didn’t appear in the training photos was Timo Werner, who was on international duty with Germany.

Lampard said that there were still a few players who he was waiting on to return to training due to coronavirus tests coming back.

Werner was not part of the photos and so won’t have much training time with the Blues ahead of the trip to Newcastle.

Thiago Silva missing

It’s no surprise that Thiago Silva was missing from training, with Lampard stating that he had just come back from international duty.

The Brazilian was playing for his country in South America on Tuesday night and had only just landed back in the country.

The Blues boss is being cautious over the 36-year-old’s playing time so that he can really get the best out of him.

The centre-back is set to miss the match in the North East, likely to return for the Champions League match on Tuesday.

Ben Chilwell back

The left-back was an injury concern for the Blues after coming off while playing for England last Sunday with a back injury.

However, the 23-year-old recovered and was on the bench for England in midweek, returning to training with Chelsea yesterday.

Along with the other England players, Chilwell should be fit and ready to go for the match against the Magpies.
