Kai Havertz injury update as Leverkusen's Peter Bosz drops hint about Chelsea transfer target

Kai Havertz remains a doubt to return to the Bayer Leverkusen starting XI for tomorrow's Bundesliga game away to Schalke, with head coach Peter Bosz saying that the newly-turned 21-year-old was part of a light training session on Friday but caution is still required.

The Chelsea transfer target, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, is also being monitored by Bayern Munich among several other European giants.

He missed last weekend's defeat away to the Bavarians and the midweek DFB Cup semi-final win over Saarbrucken because of a muscle issue picked up in the victor away to Freiburg two weeks ago, when he scored the only goal from a tight angle.

"We only did light training this morning," Bosz said on Friday. "We have to be careful and I can't say anything definite about Kai."

The Blues have shown a keen interest in signing the Germany international and are expected to complete their deal for RB Leipzig's Timo Werner in the coming days after agreeing to activate his £53million release clause.

Havertz has 11 Bundesliga goals and five assists for Leverkusen, who were in fifth position entering the weekend.

With fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach away to Bayern on Saturday evening and Schalke, who are managed by former Huddersfield Tow boss David Wagner, in a dire run of form Bosz is confident they can return to the top four but warned his team must look after their own business first.

"When you see a direct rival like Gladbach are playing away in Munich then that might offer the opportunity to go ahead of them. But there's no point at looking what they do if we don't beat Schalke," Bosz. added
