Kai Havertz deal makes sense as Liverpool prepare to lose midfielder with underrated quality

Earlier this week, Adam Lallana was identified as the most two-footed passer in Liverpool's squad.

The England international placed top after being ranked against his teammates according to number of touches per left-footed pass and number of touches per right-footed pass. The lower the combined figure, the more two-footed the player.

The rankings are pictured below from most two-footed passer at the top, to least two-footed passer at the bottom.

However, Lallana is set to leave the club for free at the end of the campaign due to the his contract expiring. He's played fewer than 900 minutes in all competitions this season which equates to less than 10 full matches.

It remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp will desire a two-footed player to such a degree that he'll look to directly replace Lallana, but if so, who fits the bill?

To celebrate the impending return of the Bundesliga this weekend, let's take a look at whether there are any talents in Germany who meet the criteria.

Each Bundesliga player who has accumulated at least 300 touches in the division so far this season has been ranked, and from the top 30 - 13 are midfielders, shown below.

Ivan Perisic places top of the 13, though, and with the Croatian now 31 years-old, he's unlikely to catch the attention of Liverpool.

Once filtering out players over the age of 26, seven players remain, with one player in particular being prominently linked with the Reds in the past - Kai Havertz.

The Bayer Leverkusen prospect is just 20 years-old but he's very talented, which is largely why his club have stated that he's worth over £100m in today's market.

His teammate, Moussa Diaby, is more two-footed according to the numbers, but once considering overall quality and suitability, Havertz appears to make more sense.

He's a German international, tends to play as an offensive midfielder, and Liverpool are rumoured to be interested in his services ahead of a transfer in the future. It's likely that the club have spotted more to his game than his two-footedness alone, but it's a valuable skill nevertheless.

This season, Havertz has scored 10 goals and assisted eight in 34 appearances, with a scoring contribution occurring roughly every 163 minutes - which is greater than once in every two matches.

He's been spoken about as a potential heir to Roberto Firmino as Liverpool's link in the final third, and when European football resumes on Saturday, perhaps he'll be one of the names to grab the headlines.
