
The shape of a standing Kannon Bosatsu, or bodhisattva of compassion, emerges on Mt. Doun in Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture. Known as the "summer solstice kannon," it is visible on the mountain only for about 50 days before and after the summer solstice. Light streaming from the southwest side at about 3 p.m. on Saturday began forming the feet, and in about 10 minutes expanded into the three-meter tall standing figure with a staff.
