Kacey Musgraves chose herself.
The Grammy-winning country singer, 32, is speaking about filing for divorce amid the pandemic and how the past year has upended all her expectations.
“If you would’ve told me the night of the Grammys, ‘Hey, in two years, you’re going to be divorced and have a whole ‘nother album written,’ I would have been like, ‘F— off. No. No way,’” she told Elle in a new interview out Thursday.
The “High Time” singer and fellow country singer-songwriter Ruston Kelly, who married in 2017, filed for divorce last summer.
“I could have coasted for another couple of years,” Musgraves said. “Just not paying attention to my feelings or not really dealing with some things.”
But the pandemic spared no one’s psyche, and Musgraves began to challenge herself with questions like, “Why did I make these decisions? How did I get here? How can I prevent myself from getting there again? Why do I keep choosing the same kind of people?”
Musgraves admitted that though she “felt, in many ways, on top of the world in my career,” her personal life was a different story.
“I felt like I was dying inside,” she said. “I was crumbling. I was sad. I felt lonely. I felt broken.”
Given that she’s “from a family full of long marriages,” the songstress said, “It was hard to not feel like I was in some ways a failure.”
She pointed to her grandparents still being together after having met in elementary school.
Now though, she’s on the other side of that mindset.
“There’s nothing more shameful than staying where you don’t fit anymore,” said Musgraves.
