Kabul's car-decoration craze hits the skids

If you're stuck in a traffic jam in the Afghan capital, the decor of surrounding vehicles will grab your attention.

Thousands of drivers in Kabul express themselves by decorating their vehicles with quirky stickers. From snazzy graphics to romantic overtures - personalising car exteriors has been a habit here since the 1970s. 

Aman Hiran, who has been in the car-decorating business for nearly two decades, said his sticker shop survived the years under the Taliban, because even the fighters enjoyed making their rides their own.

"Taliban would come to us and demand to put an English sticker on their car, they did not even understand what it means but they loved it," he said.

But as the Afghan economy struggles, the once lucrative business isn't what it used to be.
